This is one of the most important archaeological sites of America and is located 45 minutes from La Paz, near Lake Titicaca.
It began between 1500 and 1400 BC and mysteriously collapsed circa 1100-1200 d. C. Given its age, some scholars considered the mother culture of the American civilizations, others as the capital of an ancient megalithic empire.
Many are the secrets that have and are being literally "dug up", because today more than 80% of this empire is buried.
The Tiwanaku population based its economy on agriculture and livestock and rich architecture is characterized by its flat decorated with reliefs and stelae incised placed on denoting vast knowledge in engineering and astronomy.
The site consists of seven important architectural constructions: Kalasasaya Semi-Subterranean Temple, Pyramid of Akapana, Kantatallita, Kerikala, Putuni and Puma Punku.
In the museum we appreciate their excellent work with the famous ceramic queros (ceremonial glasses), the huaco-portraits (three-dimensional portrait of a human face in a pot) and textiles and especially in architectural construction, many of the which have astronomical orientation.
